Contextual aspects influencing the way Designers4Billions work

Contextual aspects are elements that describe the situation in the eyes of the Designers4Billions; these aspects are outer forces that influence the way they work and design.

The most important contextual aspects in Design4Billions are about four different subjects: (1) stakeholders, (2) bottlenecks/fields of tension, (3) consumer & the product advantage to the consumer and (4) corporations approach. These subjects will be mentioned in short, in-depth information can be found elsewhere in the framework or in the research report Design4Billions.
  • The high number of stakeholders in the project, which can throw light on all the different perspectives in Design4Billions.
  • The bottlenecks / fields of tension in their work.
  • The consumer and the product advantage to the consumer; consumer feedback often results in unexpected answers. The reasoning of the BoP-consumer, which determines their buying behavior is different than the western reasoning.
    From consumer research, we learned that ‘A Good Night Sleep’ is the best thing that a mosquito bed net gives to the BoP-consumer. It is aimed at malaria prevention, but this is not the main reason for them to buy it. They buy it for a Good Night Sleep.

  • The corporations’ approach; almost all the corporations have an approach of co-creation. The available literature on business creation for the Base of the Pyramid is only available on multinational corporations (MNCs). This research shows that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and foundations have an approach of co-creation as well.
