How to Design4Billions?

This framework contains academic and experience-based information in Design4Billions.
Design4Billions is western product development for the 4 Billions consumers in emerging markets, who live of less than $4 a day.

Four Chapters

This knowledge framework contains four chapters, structuring the most important information in Design4Billions: a basic understanding of global development, the different stakeholders in these crossing borders-projects, the work of Designers4Billions and the need to collaborate when diving under the water surface.

The Metaphor of the iceberg

When you compare the economic pyramid (Prahalad and Hart, 2002, p. 4) with an iceberg, the largest part of the world population is living under the water surface. This is a target group with other product opportunities, and a new world to discover for western design engineers.
The western designer is standing at the edge of the water surface and is looking downwards to discover innovation possibilities in emerging markets. Can industrial design engineers approach these markets successfully? Which are the most important aspects for the industrial design engineers to emphasize in their product development process? And what is (are) the best way(s) to approach the consumers in the so-called Base of the Pyramid?
